WE COULD BE, ROUND 3; GAME SUMMARY
STATUS: SURVIVOR
LOVE INTEREST: Libra
CLOSE FRIENDS: Parker Rochford, Ryoko Shinonome, Marissa Newland, Jared Kowalski, Simon Laurent
HONORABLE MENTIONS: Lieutenant Columbo, Gwendolyn Poole, Casey Brinke, Ruby Rose, Rin (MURDERBOT)
EMOTIONAL TETHERS: Marcy Wu, Daisuke Serizawa, Red Riding Hood, Emma Hawkins
BOTTOM LINE: Stripped of his powers and forced to play a fatal game, Rex's ego was brought back down to Earth as he learned what it truly means to be a hero. In situations that are beyond fixing, in times of misery and chaos, you must continue to be there for others in any way you can. Despite the stakes, Rex Sloan stayed true to the promise that he made to himself as a child- That he would never, not once, kill another innocent human being as long as he still breathed.

OPT OUT;
Hello there gang! ♥︎
This is going to be Rex's opt out for Shardbond, however if you've played with me before please note that I re-use this opt out each game, so your comment is still here and screened if you've mentioned anything previously!
For cursory CR or more "unavoidable" things, Rex is pretty NSFW and has a lewd, crude, and somewhat violent sense of humor. The good news is he has a sense to tone it down with characters of more delicate sensibilities and in front of children, but this is kind of an unavoidable shtick! Also, he is supposed to be comic relief and I have run into players who are not really down for comedic interactions, although I can guarantee heartbreak and misery is in the cards for him as well.
Regarding more specific content warnings, Rex hails from Invincible so there will be some extreme body horror, depictions of graphic violence, descriptions of childhood food insecurity and starvation, mentions of negligent and abusive parenting, and of course child soldier bullshit. Rex also has quite a bit of PTSD, and exhibits hypersexuality due to trauma but looking at this cast and considering his canonpoint I am not entirely sure he will be flirting all that much! He also exhibits an unhealthy dependence on alcohol but he will be trying his best to maybe avoid that- We'll see how things go! As for specific injury related trigger warnings, I'm going to have to list hand amputation, gunshot wounds, head and eye gore, and mass lacerations. Even without his powers, he will probably think about and mention explosions a lot, and routinely fantasizes about killing his birth parents, so um... Let's put patricide in there as well. Suicidal ideation will probably come up passively also. Discrimination based on skin color and class are also potential mentions in tags, so he comes with the internalizations of a victim of classism and colorism in an American capitalist society, to be fair.
Another big one is wanting to avoid Invincible spoilers at ANY canonpoint, he will probably be pulled from 2x06 in this particular game.
Also, if he is not your vibe in general and you would like to avoid him altogether, feel free to comment down below! Comments are screened.

CHARACTER DESCRIPTION
Standing at five feet and eleven inches and weighing in at a whopping two hundred and fifteen pounds, Rex Splode may be one of Invincible's more regularly-sized heroes, but that doesn't make his appearance any less striking. He sports a tan complexion, dark green eyes, and reddish brown hair that's always tied in a (fuckboy) manbun, although he is usually in his neon abomination of a supersuit and rarely hangs around in regular clothes. He possesses a deviated septum and a cleft chin, and as for his build, it's all hard angles sharp edges. Even depowered, he will typically smell like gunpowder and as though he was just freshly on fire. For a more in-depth summary of his abilities and superhuman biology, see here. Rex's regular speaking voice is even louder than his questionable fashion choices, and is raspy as well. In the animated series he is played by Jason Mantzoukas. Additionally, for character-relevant content warnings and opt-out information, please direct your attention this way.
SHIPPING PREFERENCES
Oof. When it comes relationships and even casual flings, Rex has a pretty shit track record. He has a history of infidelity and repeatedly cheated on his competent and incredibly kind-hearted ex-girlfriend, often using women as a objects to distract from the compounding trauma of his depressing childhood and current line of work.
At this point in the series, Rex is reeling from an incident that woke him up, making him deeply remorseful for the ways he's treated "every girl he's ever dated," so he's going to purposefully distance himself from others and look the other way if he picks up on any attempts at flirtation.
Old habits die hard, however, so curbing his naturally problematic instincts is a new skill he's desperately attempting to hone.
MISCELLANEOUS
Before meeting Atom Eve, it could be argued that Rex's first love was gymnastics, which greatly informs his center of gravity. Even in a power-nerfed state, Rex has an incredible sense of balance, and even when he is being goofy moves with a kind of precision that is almost frightening if anyone is keen enough to observe him closely. Although he is well-versed in a variety of martial arts, including Karate, Muay Thai, and Krav Maga, gymnastics was the first fighting style he learned. Rex was never good in school and is said to have had no friends growing up, so his perfection of the craft may have stemmed from the realization that he was finally good at something.
Seeing as he's had to hear the catastrophic effects of his own explosions from a prepubescent age, Rex is unbothered by high volumes and has a tendency to miss small noises when his life isn't in immediate danger. This is also potentially why he speaks so loudly 24/7- To him, that's just what's normal. And lastly, since Rex grew up impoverished and food insecure, his tastebuds are totally haywire. While he does love American fast food and anything spicy, he lacks discretion and will eat almost anything you offer him, no matter how questionable. In fact, even if it's absolute dogshit or from a nearly radioactive box, he will legitimately find the food delicious.

About:"Robot: Apologies for Rex Splode. He's-
Rex: Unbelievably awesome!
Robot: Incorrigible."
Experienced as he may be when it comes stopping alien invasions and using his hands to turn various bits and bobs into bombs, Rex's personality off the hero playing field leaves a lot to be desired. His super suit is dipped in the most eye-searing shades of orange and red possible, and Rex's voice is somehow even louder than that. He's always ready to fire back at anyone and everyone that dares to challenge his self-proclaimed "awesomeness" (read: unbearable bullshittery), even when they mean only the best, and especially when they actually have something of note to say. Rex's immature turn of phrase and constant need to be the center of attention are only worsened by the fact that he's got a nasty temper, and somehow seems to get under the skin of even the most forgiving of supers, like the series' titular character. His extreme jealousy in the presence of the newly minted Invincible when the other boy so much as breathes within the vicinity of Rex's then-girlfriend reveals that while Rex may talk and talk and talk, beneath the bold exterior, he is frighteningly insecure.
Now, not only is the guy a yippity-yappity piece of shit, he's also a pathologically self-centered two-timer (or I guess in this case three... I will Explain). In a span of one episode, the dolt skips a funeral for the world's greatest heroes to have a kinky clone fling with his teammate, all while cheating on his loving, long-time girlfriend. Not only does he humiliate and devalue both women when he is caught red handed, but his attempt at an apology at the end of the whole ordeal involves taking no real accountability, even though he eventually realizes the gravity of his mistake. One important thing to note is that Rex seems to have some idea that he is constantly ruining his own life and that of others, but he himself is confused as to why. His specialty is blowing things up, not putting them back together, and that applies to his personal life as well.
One might be wondering how someone this uncouth ends up being selected as one of the New Guardians of the Globe. If you didn't hate him already for being a stinky cheating scumbag, he continues to makes a fool of himself at the Guardians tryout, taunting and teasing a cursed adult with monstrous strength whose powers make her look like a little girl. His underestimation of Monster Girl leads to Rex getting the living shit kicked out of him, and while he flies through the air and survives a fall that would have definitely ended in death for any normal civilian, if it wasn't for Invincible's help, he might've suffered a worse fate than just shitting blood. Even though Invincible is why Rex's entire skull didn't end up cracked clean open, Rex flips the guy off and claims that he was doing just fine. If it seems like there is some sort of pattern going on here, there is- Rex starts fights and will continue to hunker down even if it will ultimately end in his own downfall, and while there is an admirable amount of pluck in there somewhere, he is desperate to show anyone within a five mile radius that he matters. That he means something. Almost as if, deep down, he struggles to believe that himself.
Rex's next Fuckboy Nightmare Tantrum (FNT™) displays that he has trouble taking orders and shows blatant disrespect for authority, as he clowns on Black Samson for losing his powers not once but several times, despite the fact that the older man is an experienced hero with a gruff exterior and a kind heart. Thankfully, Samson stuns Rex into silence with a terrifying threat, but the whole ordeal further illustrates how Rex seems to always be acting like he's hot shit when he has no reason to do so, and that's not even going into the gross things he says about his new female teammates almost immediately after. Still, like the morally questionable Cecil Steadman and awful nightmare parent Omni-Man, Rex isn't just a jackass. There are layers to him, too.
"Mark: I didn't want to say it while you were dating the guy, but man, what an asshole.
Eve: He wasn't always."
Rex is no stranger to the brutality of being a superhero in the Invincible-verse, casually backflipping and galavanting over bodies, seemingly numb to the brutal gore that comes with the reality of being a superhero. And yet, even he is forced to look death in the face when the new Guardians square-up against a bunch of hitmen for hire and encounter one of the most threatening beasts in the universe. Rex sees Invincible as a threat he is no match for, sure, but when the other hero is nearly-slaughtered in battle, it is Rex's reaction that we see first, quiet and horrified. For someone who is usually so loud, it's a sobering reminder that even the strongest of heroes are never really Invincible. From this point onwards, Rex seems to take the training much more seriously, and when his final teammate actually recovers, he is at the center of the silly shenanigans that allow the team to relax and kick back somewhat, going as far as to pour out several milk cartoons and fill them with an endless supply of alcohol. Goofy and stupid, sure, but admirable- In that it took so much care and effort to do so. Rex appears to simultaneously be the source of the team's drama and oddly, it's camaraderie as well. He is the type of person that you need some time and space to warm up to, and, for all his big-mouthed nonsense, feels most comfortable when he's a part of a team.
Additionally, it must be acknowledged that some of Rex's Slacktivism can in part be credited to the fact that he is burnt out from the life he is living. His tendency to sleep around, goof off, and drink incessantly is probably due to the fact that he has never gone to school and has been fighting for several years. He is openly bitter about how rotten his childhood was, though he doesn't go into detail, and in some ways Rex is currently trying to make up for lost time. Seeing as Rex is often the one to call out what's going on when things get severe, he also is the most aware of his own mortality, constantly highlighting how badly he does not want to die when running from danger. For this reason, his callous attitude is most likely a manifestation of the bitterness he feels for not having as much of a say in his life as some others, and this also may be the source of his prickliness regarding authority. Rex can't stop doing the superhero thing even if he wanted to- It's literally the only life he knows how to live.
And finally, Rex screwed up big time when it comes to Eve, but his soft spot for her even after his fuckups illustrates that he may not be as much of a heartless himbo as one would initially expect. In his Tragic Tomcat Apology, he does say, "You know I love you, right?" to which Eve agrees. She doesn't let him have the do-over he requests, but when she shows up safe and sound near the end of the first season, Rex is the first to embrace her and is visibly relieved to know that she is alright, despite everything that's happened. The photographs that Eve takes down while crying about their breakup also suggest that while Rex is a raging rudeass in public, his private persona may be more shy and goofy, as he has his hand up and a sincere, somewhat embarrassed smile in one of them. Who would have thought that Mr. Look at Me, Look at Me! would be so camera shy, huh?
Regains: "SUPER SUIT"- This consists of the top and bottom of Rex's super suit, affectionately designed by Art Rosenbaum when Rex was first starting out. Consisting of a somewhat questionable high collar and otherwise yellow and orange jumpsuit motif, most of his body is covered, including his head. If it looks a little like a tacky Hazmat suit, that's kind of the idea- Since his main shtick is self generated explosives, his hero gear is designed to protect him from all that.
"GOGGLES"- Orange goggles that match the super suit and keep dangerous particles out of Rex's eyes. Not too orange, though! You can still tell that he has dark brows and green eyes if you look closely.
"GLOVES"- These look like regular brown leather gloves, but they are designed out of a specific material that allows him to charge his usual projectiles without the gloves burning off (what that is... I couldn't tell you). They don't rip or tear easily.
"BOOTS"- Brown boots that the lower half of the super suit is tucked into. The soles are fairly comfortable, but they might be a bit questionably flat for all acrobatics he is used to doing.
"PHOTOGRAPH"- A photo of himself and Atom Eve, both in their super suits, sporting peace signs. Rex's arm is around her waist and they look happy. *Renewable.
" 'MILK' CARTON"- This supposedly innocuous milk carton is filled to the brim with beer. There is a little doodle over what appears to be a fourteen year old girl's face on the side. The drawing involves adding ears and an angry expression to her seemingly innocent mug. *Renewable
Abilities: If it helps, I'll just do the whole summary of how I imagine the power nerfing would impact him and what skill sets would remain! In terms of his implants, we have yet to understand specifically how they manifest in the animated series, but they are the source of his ability to charge and explode projectiles. The implants will be palpable on the bottom sides of either forearm, from his wrists to a little past his elbows. They will be collections of what feel to be metal wires beneath the skin, small and fine and packed beneath real muscle, but certainly present. As for his weight, in the comics it is stated that while Rex looks like he should weigh something around 155-175 lbs, he actually is 215 lbs. Benefits that it would offer him involve a hit from him hurting and bruising even worse that one would expect, and if someone were to punch him, they'd probably end up injuring a hand if they aren't careful. Since his muscles are denser than an average human, to slice through them will just involve a bit more work. Think of cutting into a wooden table versus, idk, something softer, like a well-stuffed couch. That being said, his neck, while a little thick, is remains damn snappable.
Abilities-wise, Rex is trained in mixed martial arts and has a pretty killer wingspan when throwing, as his main method of fighting involves launching projectiles. However, his very first love was gymnastics, so he is used to doing things like jumping obscenely high, backflipping all over the place, etc. This ability will be extremely stunted because he will finally feel his actual weight, however, he will still prefer to jump, handstand, flip, and roll around. The distances he will be able to move, however, are fairly average because he weighs a lot more than most professional gymnasts. That being said, his reflexes are quick because he has been primped and primed specifically by a black ops team to be a killing machine.
While all this is true, Rex will really emotionally struggle with the murder aspect of the game, as he hates to do it and isn't used to killing from a close range. He's also a fucking idiot so... It won't be impossible to kill him if he has his guard down. The man still needs oxygen so cut off his air supply and he'll be out like any other old human.
Motives: Rex may seem like the kind of person who would blow through bad guys with little to no thought, and while that may be true, they'd have to be bad guys. He is not ooey-gooey or sentimental like Invincible or Atom Eve, but that doesn't mean he's down too shank a civilian. In fact, he would be highly opposed to it. Prior to joining up with the teen team, Rex ranked up a considerably horrifying kill count, as his impersonal and devastating method of killing made it easy to simply burst targets into smitherines, and his strange ability to charge otherwise innocuous objects helped him slip through security fairly easily.
1) Revenge for a teammate- Rex would be willing to kill someone if they took the life of one of his own. As this game has a team mechanic, he will be fiercely loyal to whoever he spends the most time with, provided they don't hate his ass enough to straight up punt him into the corner. This place is also filled with several non-supers, which is even more stressful for a guy like him, since that means he will have to stop hanging back and being lazy. Rex will be forced to confront what it truly means to be a hero.
2) Avenging the death of a child- People who are down to kill kids are on his shitlist- That's a done deal.
3) Hubris/An Accident (IS THIS A MOTIVE I DON'T KNOW)- Rex is pompous on the outside and wildly insecure on the inside. If anyone challenges his abilities as a super hero or makes things personal, whatever that's supposed to mean, he could easily kill someone in a fit of rage.
4) Eradicating a threat- If there's someone shady who is willing to harm, maim, or kill multiple people, Rex would take it upon himself to take them out. After all, his body count is already high enough as it is. Why have someone else do it?
5) Keeping Eve's life safe- They may be broken up, but considering his sordid history and how badly Eve smarts over Rex's betrayal of her trust, she is possibly the only person who ever truly loved him. He would hate to kill for her as he knows it's something she'd make him swear he'd never do, but he would be desperate to keep her safe. If the people in charge of this place can take away his powers and pit teams against each other to a fight to the death, god knows what else they could do.
Sample: With Simon and Gwen, though the first thread comes with a... CW: for strangulation. GOD, I am sorry...
Plot Involvement: Probably not. :(
Case Involvement: This is my very first time apping to a murder game, so not in particular!
Other: The animated series seems to pretty loyally follow the comics, just portraying things in a different order and improving on scenes and characters to suit current times. As a result, Rex's backstory and how it influences his personality was written to be vague intentionally. While I know what happens in the comics and it does influence how I write him, the series has only given us hints and so that is why that portion is a bit less specific.

IN CHARACTER
PHYSICAL AFFECTION: Go for it! Rex has a habit of stepping into other people's spaces, though he may be prickly if someone he doesn't like invades his. Provided that your character gets chummy with him, he is very touchy and even affectionate.
PHYSICAL VIOLENCE: Please! Kill him.
RELATIONSHIPS: Uhhh if you're looking for a committed relationship from this one, first of all, please reconsider??? He's a cheater. When it comes to flirting, Rex loves attention, but you will notice one thing- He might be a very loose when it comes to casual hookups, but getting close to him will prove a huge challenge. I am uncomfortable with large age gaps re: shipping in general, so let's keep it between characters who are 17-21. While Rex's (problematic) preferences include female-identifying characters, femmes, and twinks, he once barks the line "I can bang anyone I want," when bragging about his new status as a Guardian of the Globe, and it's pretty un-gendered. That being said, he is insecure as all hell and will be both threatened and largely uninterested in anyone as/more masc-presenting than him.
MEDICAL INFORMATION: His powers are nerfed for WCB, but it must be noted that if anyone were to come into physical contact with him, he is almost twice as heavy as he looks, due to cybergenetic experimentation that has made his muscles dense. Also, if one were touch his forearms, amidst all the muscle, there'd feel like something was beneath the skin, like a wiry, metal implant.
SORE SPOTS: Anything regarding the abduction of children or recruitment of young people to be child soldiers without their consent. If you want to make him extra angry, have it be kids who were hungry or down on their luck. He also gets touchy around genuine familial interaction and the mention of things like Father's or Mother's day. Lastly, Rex prefers going by his superhero alias and despises his family name.

OUT OF CHARACTER
BACKTAGGING: Yes!
THREADHOPPING: Be my guest.
FOURTHWALLING: No thank you! As much as Rex would love to be namedropped.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS
VISUAL: Standing at 5'11", Rex Sloan (alias: Rex Splode) is the kind of arrogant prick whose chiseled jawline would imply that he's ripped, and he often sports a cocky grin as if he knows it, too. With broad shoulders and long, reddish-brown hair pulled into a tight bun under that obnoxiously eye-catching orange and yellow outfit, he is the pinnacle of toxic and tragically fragile masculinity. He may not be the biggest or the strongest member of the newly minted Guardians of the Globe, but he is definitely the loudest- And the worst.
AURAL: He is voiced by Jason Mantzoukas.
OLFACTORY: Strong, musky cologne and a tinge of something burnt. Also, often reeks of beer or aftershave.
DEMEANOUR: Cocky, mean-spirited, and equipped with an almost villainous laugh, Rex's foul mouth and rude behavior will all at once make you question if he really is one of the good guys. Ill-tempered and quick to anger, he's often the first to throw punches physically or verbally. He struts around like he owns the place and his quippy remarks seem to suggest that he is in need of constant attention, and um, he's annoying af tbh. That being said, he does carry himself with the kind of charisma and swagger that men envy and women never seem to be getting enough of (unfortunately). Spend enough time with him and one will notice that he is a bit of a class clown and, if you're on his team, no matter how much of your life he makes a living hell on the daily, when it comes down to the bottom line? Rex will protect you until his dying breath.
